Where the number comes from
Two kinds of number, and the page always says which one you are looking at.
For a fair Pengo has read, the count is stands counted off the organiser’s own exhibitor directory, read page by page to the last entry. Not the number the organiser advertises, which is a claim made before the floor filled, and not an estimate. Everything that has been read is browsable, with the industry mix and a sample of the companies on each one.
For every other fair, the lookup searches the organiser’s own site and the trade fair registries and reports the figure those pages state, with the sentence it was printed in and a link to the page, so you can check it in one click. It is never estimated from the venue’s size or from how well known the fair is: a fair nobody publishes a number for comes back with its dates and its venue and says so.
Published figures nearly always belong to the edition that has already happened, because organisers count after the doors close. That is the useful answer to how big next year will be, and the page tells you which year you are reading rather than passing it off as the coming one.
